Pressed concrete pilings are pre-cast cylinders of concrete, approximately one foot long and six inches in diameter. The installer begins by digging a two-foot hole next to the foundation and uses a hydraulic ram to drive the cylinders, one on top of the other into the soil until significant resistance is felt, strata is reached or bedrock is hit. Concrete cylinders are hydraulically pressed against the bottom of the foundation. This drives the cylinder into the ground against the weight of the house. A concrete cap is then added. Bottle jacks are used to lift the house as close as possible to its original position, additional cylinders and metal shims fill the space between the piling’s cap and the foundation and the house is lowered onto the pilings. The holes are then backfilled.

- Dig top holes (approximately 3′x3′x3′) underneath the perimeter grade beam of the structure at pre-determined pier placement sites.
- Place all loose dirt on plywood or plastic for ease in clean up, and to minimize disturbance of lawn and landscaping.
- Use hydraulic power unit to press pre-cast concrete cylinders into ground until jacked refusal has been met (solid strata).
- Place cap (trapezoid) block on top of pier cylinders that have been driven to solid strata.
- Remove all loose mortar from the cracks in brick veneer.
- Using the top of the trapezoid block, size and place a pre-cast concrete cylinder beside a hydraulic jack.
- Using a pre-determined sectional approach, raise areas of structure in small increments until structure’s natural position has been attained or .
- Using steel shims to secure the lift of the structure, place steel shims on top of cylinder that was placed in Step 8 above.
- Remove hydraulic jacks, then size and place another pre-cast concrete cylinder beside the cylinder placed in Step 8, using steel shims to secure cylinders in place.
- Place soil in top hole surrounding pier cap. Use a mounding approach to allow for soil subsidence. Remove excess soil from site.
- Discard plywood and rake areas free of debris.

- Using hydraulic jacks, the interior floor levels are raised to their natural position. The team moves slowly and systematically to ensure a gentle and uniform lift. The Crew Chief monitors the lift of the structure to ensure the reaction of the structure and interior elevation readings is accurate and does not cause undo strain on the structure.
- Once the structure has been lifted to its natural position, concrete cylinders replace the hydraulic jacks to provide permanent support to the structure.
- The team corrects any previously installed shimming and replaces it with metal shims, as needed.
- Beams are then added, as necessary for the repair of the pier and beam foundation, in areas of the floor system that need reinforcement.
